* Found one of the Little Free Libaries with The Librarians swag and nabbed one of these coin thingies:

It took a good bit of walking because the first I went to didn't have any of the items. They are also supposed to have free Librarians books, but I haven't found one with those yet.

* Am back on my quest to do all the Portland stairs. I've done the Washington park ones before, and actually photographed these stairs before, but not since I started tracking my journey to conquer them all:

* Books With Pictures Con was today:

They really get a great line up of artists each year.

Just Stab Me Now by Jill Bearup

A comic tale of a writer taking off into fantasy romance for a break. And to escape her frustrating job.

Her notion of a heroine hits the actual heroine, who is middle-aged, a widow, and the mother of two children trying desperately to protect them.

Over the course of about six hours this week, the weather went from "pleasant warm early-summer" to "holy bananas, it is hot and sticky high summer" and I was not emotionally prepared for it. But I am promised thunderstorms today, and I got cucumbers at the farmer's market, and will finish swapping out the cozy linens for the crisp ones, and all of that will help.

Today is cloudy, mild, and damp.  It rained yesterday, and probably more last night.

I fed the birds.  I haven't seen much activity though.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/7/25 -- I did a bit of work on the patio.

It's been spitting or drizzling for much of the day, and is picking up again now.

EDIT 6/7/25 -- I put out more food for the birds.

I've seen several sparrows and house finches, a catbird, and at least one mourning dove.

The 'Mr. Stripey' tomato has green fruit.  :D

Philosophical Questions: Looks

People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

Would the world be a better or worse place if everyone looked the same?

Much worse. It would be difficult to tell people apart. That would require doing something to make artificial distinctions, which has a lot of drawbacks. We know that problems occur when people are difficult or impossible to distinguish, because those things happen under conditions where people's normal distinctions are obscured. One of the most common is that it runs up the crime rate, because people are more likely to misbehave when they can't be punished because nobody can tell for sure who did it.

* A Heated Rivalry, an m/m romance about rival hockey players is becoming a TV show. It's going to be on Crave, so IDK if it'll be available in the US. Hockey based romance is huge, but not something I've read at all. I am kinda curious to check out the book since it's getting a show, but I am also drowning under my TBR list.

* The reveal trailer for Resident Evil 9 looks amazing.

I did the Mt Hood Railroad. It doesn't go all the way to Mt Hood, but climbs into the foothills of it and gets to about 500 ft elevation. Get get let off between a fruit orchard and winery.

We also get views of Hood:

And Adams:

It was cute and I like being able to get out and do these excursion trains. They are so couples focused it used to be impossible to even buy a single ticket for a lot of them. That's part of why I've gone from never having done any to having done a bunch recently.

My assigned seat was at a booth with a couple and the conductor asked if he could re-seat me to spare me how awkward that was, but I'd booked an upgraded ticket for the bar car and didn't want to be moved to coach. Then he swung by later to 'just check on me'.

Also, the previous night at that beer patio, I only stayed so long because it was all couples. Hood River is vacation spot that caters heavily to queer travelers. The town's logo is a rainbow heart. A beer in a place like that after a hike, that should be as good as it gets for me, but also I'm just there alone, surrounded by couples. It gets pretty wearying.

I make to make the best of it and I'm doing real cool things, but being solo was just especially wearying on this trip. I opted out of doing the wine tasting out in the vineyard because that was just going to be like intensely coupley.

Sorry for the delay with this part! Things have been a bit hectic for me. But I'm glad to be back.

Well, maybe not so glad when it comes to this book, which seems to really bring out the teenage misogynist in me. I don't WANT to dislike the female lead or the relationship that we're being shown in this book, but it's getting pretty rough.

I don't want to immediately blame the co-writer for this, but there is a distinct difference in style from Lackey's other works in the series. Gwyna, for example, was portrayed as pretty headstrong and occasionally ran a little roughshod over her partner, but I didn't dislike her the way I do Magpie. It does make me think that one of my next books will be a different Lackey-and-Sherman team up (maybe the Bard's Tale tie in, "Castle of Deception" - which could be fun as it also includes a very different style of renegade dark elf) so I can compare the tone and style.

I also feel like the treatment of Roma in this book feels different, and this is where I feel my whiteness as a detriment as a reviewer. To ME, the micro-aggressions and dismissal/obliviousness of the white characters toward Raven and Crow feel possibly more realistic than we've seen so far from previous white characters, but also more frustrating and uncomfortable for me as a reader. It makes me wonder what a reader of color, particularly a Roma reader, would feel about this. Is this better or worse to read? Is harsh realism more preferable to a naive escapism?

I don't know the answer to that one. But if nothing else, I appreciate this book making me think about it, I suppose.

It's still not as fun to read though... )
