Hello! Last week, I posted about my t-shirt quilt and what I had done so far on it and what my next steps were. This week, I'm gonna give you an update of how far we got in this blanket for my boyfriend :)

Mostly, I sewed together our 5x5 squares into 3x3 blocks. Then I organized them into a pattern and sewed together two 9x3 strips and one 6x3 strip. I stopped because I accidentally sewed the wrong ends together because I heard some disappointing news.

I can't wait to start stuffing the quilt :)

Hello! About a week ago, I decided to challenge myself to make a quilt entirely out of recycled t-shirts and sheets within my house that were otherwise going to be thrown out. I wanted to make a puff quilt and reduce the amount of prebought fabrics I used. I wanted this quilt to be made entirely of t-shirts and t-shirt discards.

All of these t-shirts otherwise would have been thrown out by me due to stains or decal damage, and so that was one of my only parameters for this quilt. My other parameter was, of course, “Will I wear this t-shirt within the next three months?” If the answer to the question was no and the shirt incurred damage, it was going into the quilt

So I set to cutting out the t-shirts when I had an idea. I had been seeing TikToks of puff quilts and I had a eureka moment: I could use the shirt discards to “puff” my t-shirt quilt!

Unfortunately, I didn’t get beginning counts of how many t-shirts I had initially. It only really occurred to me to count today. However, since I still had shirts to cut into strips, I can give you a guess about how many shirts I had initially, which is approximately 36 shirts.

Across the span of about 2 days, I managed to whittle down the shirt pile from 36 to 22 and to get 53 squares, all 5x5. Today, I decimated the rest of the t-shirt pile and ended up with a resounding 146 squares. I wanted a 3x3 block quilt for this project so that removed about two squares-ish from this.
I created three arbitrary groups for my t-shirt squares: colored, white base, and black base, and counted how many of each I had (Black: 52, white: 46, colored: 49, for inquiring minds). From here, I started to compile a theoretical pattern for my blocks in my journal, and if I am able, I’ll upload a couple of pictures of my mad ramblings here.

Through my block patterns, I decided to cut a couple more 5x5s to be on the safer side. I also decided to do a 5-inch-width border around the entire outside of the quilt, as well as through the two middles.

Once I doodled a pattern in which my three groups could fit into a pattern without “touching each other,” as it were, I started setting up how the quilt blocks could look in theory. It took up the whole sewing room! You could not step in there without stepping on a quilt block!

Once I got the basic premise of my quilt blocks out into the open (My only instruction from my journal was like BCBCWC - CWCBCB, it didn’t take into account the visual accordance of the blocks and that wasn’t my goal to begin with), I got my mom to shift around individual squares in the blocks so that the blocks wouldn’t be an eyesore. Then I gathered the blocks into a pile and decided to take a break to blog about this process so far (bye-bye, fourth wall).

Because the sewing room is toward the front of the house and in the direct path of sunlight, I got so unbearably hot during this process that I will not be continuing until the sun goes down, if I even continue at all today. Not to mention the back pain. I spent between 10 am - 3 pm in that room on the floor either cutting squares or organizing squares. This is not easy for me as a tall

From here, I’ll end up sewing my individual squares together into blocks and rearranging them as I see fit. Then I’ll have to cut 6-8 strips of fabric for the borders (my back is already locking up, just know) and stuff and sew those on. Next, I’ll cut fabric for backing (UGHHHHHHHHH!!!!) and sew it on, leaving an opening at the top. Then I’ll sew columns for each block, stuff with t-shirt discards, then sew along the bottom row and continue until the quilt is stuffed. Then I will be free!!

I'm hoping to have this quilt done by June so I can give it to my boyfriend for Christmas, so we shall see :)

EDIT: I MEANT HIS BIRTHDAY, WHICH IS JUNE 3RD!!!

Edit 2/9/25: Fixed the weird spacing
