That's Not My NameThat's Not My Name by Megan Lally

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

i listened to the audiobook thru libby on my boyfriend's library card (thanks baby), & for the most part I thought it was entirely predictable until the plot twist. if you're wondering if everyone in this goodreads reviews section is being dramatic, proverbially dick sucking this plot twist, they're not.

i had fun. i got hijabi amputee vibes and cringed for a little while there. but it was really fun and engaging :)

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review!

I think that anybody who has any anxieties about the numerous artificial intelligence large language models, and what that could mean for books, the publishing industries, movies, television shows, and all the creative fields, should pick up this book regardless if they like novellas and/or sci-fi, or they don't. The reason is, that this is the first work of fiction that I have personally read that deals with these anxieties in a raw and tangible way. While I am sure this won't be the last of this theme in the years to come, I am willing to say this is one of the firsts. And because of this, when it comes out, I need you to pick up a copy and digest and sit with what this book is trying to communicate.

In this book, we follow a young man named Rufus in an entertainment troupe in a far future, post-industrial and post-technological France which has practically reset to the medieval times, retaining very few technological advancements from the previous ages and civilization. The entertainment troupe leader helped Rufus escape the death penalty, granted that he reformed his criminal ways. Because of this, Rufus feels a debt is owed to the leader. However, when the leader gets ahold of some old technology, Rufus must contend with his morals or the man who saved his life.

Again, I cannot express enough how much I want you guys to read this book if you have even the slightest anxieties about the future to come with websites like DeepSeek, Copilot, and ChatGPT, especially in the creative fields. Once again, while I am 1000000001% this won't be the last book with these themes, this is one of the first books with this theme that I can discern and I think everyone should read it.

BeautylandBeautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

dates read: 2/21/25-3/5/25

Adina does sit-ups, showers, faxes her superiors, tracks the night sky, watches late-night television, files her notes in orderly folders. She is nineteen Earth years old with the life of a middle-aged divorcée. Is this all there is?

In this novel, a young woman, named Adina, born in Philadelphia, believes she is an alien emissary tasked with observing and reporting on human life. As she navigates her life among humans, she grapples with feelings of isolation and belonging, chronicling the beauty and fragility of existence on Earth.

I really loved this book. As a literary fiction novel, in particular.

For some reason, this book keeps getting categorized as science fiction, and I'd hate for someone to go into this book and think that this is a "traditional" science fiction book. There's no alien wars in this book folks. Don't pick this up expecting that sort of thing. There were points in the back half of this book that made me think that Adina was going to be hospitalized and it was going to be proven to her that she is not an alien, type of not science fiction .

As a literary fiction this book was fucking amazing. Ticked all my boxes, alienated girl, doesn't understand her peers, pretty much sex repulsed, sign me the fuck up!!!!!

Read this book if you like literary fiction. Avoid if you're looking for a traditional scifi book.

The Autobiography of Malcom XThe Autobiography of Malcom X by Malcolm X

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

dates read: 2/16/2024 - 6/25/2024

this gave me a much needed reflection on where we are as a country when it comes to racial politics. while we certainly have come far in the 60 years since this book has been dictated, it's not nearly enough.

one thing i really appreciate about malcolm x is that he wasn't afraid to change his views given evidence contrary to his belief system and i think we should all try to embody that

Psycho Shifters (Cruel Shifterverse, #1)Psycho Shifters by Jasmine Mas

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

dates read: 4/4/24 - 4/13/24

I feel very conflicted about this book as an individual with no social life and high school and an ao3 obsession. On one hand, it reads EXACTLY like an ABO AO3 fic. On the other hand, this is so unlike any ABO fic I could've ever read.

And yet... It was pretty good. Could I have done without the first chapter? Yes. Could I lived without lines like "While I sat on the toilet, my intestines screamed in agony as I suffered ballistic diarrhea." and "Perhaps, but if he touches the girl sexually, I will kill him." ? Yes, I could've lived my whole life without reading that. But at the end of the day, these are things that could be rectified by a good editor, which is not a difficult thing to get.

But I did like it.

And Then? And Then? What Else? And Then? And Then? What Else? by Daniel Handler

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was an eARC from NetGalley that I took too long to read. Nonetheless, thank you to NetGalley for providing the ~goods~ in return for an honest review

Have you ever wanted to purchase a shrink ray, use on yourself, and crawl inside someone's brain to experience them more in depth? That's what this book feels like, in a good way.

This book is a stream of consciousness memoir of beloved author Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler including ramblings on his favorite books and music and life experiences.

I'd recommend this book to people who love to understand how others' operate.

Dead RiverDead River by McCaid Paul

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dates read: 2/16/2025-2/18/2025

my boyfriend's grandmother told me to read this book so I guess I will....... eventually........

and I did!!!

In the Floridian panhandle, we follow our protagonist, seventeen-year-old Clayton Thomas, as he sells fish from his fishing adventures along the Choctawhatchee River. It's on one of these outings that Clayton finds a dead body and a vulnerable teenage girl alone on a houseboat. Shenanigans ensue.

The good thing about this book is that it's paced extremely well. I tore through this book in two sittings.

Before I get into some of the things I disliked about this book, I want to add a note here that this book is independently published, and that this fact is probably (most definitely ) why my grievances exist in this book.

Firstly, sometimes while reading this book, stylistic and word choice usage caused me to audibly cackle out loud due to how unserious it was, which is fine if that was the intended impact, but I could very plainly tell that it was not. An example:

"I shift on my foot too fast, and then I'm falling... f a l l i n g..."

Like okay purr mrshealy-irwin-iero.tumblr.com, serve tumblrina!

I am completely aware that this issue may have been eradicated if this was traditionally published (and why I'm not being more harsh and critical in my star rating) but I still wanted to mention it, because it threw off the whole tone of the rest of the book for me.

Another problem I had was that we had a very strong case of author's fiat (a plot device where something that works only because the author says it does. An example of this could be someone who goes around in a bright pink leotard but is a stealth specialist)* in this book.

There is a scene in this book, around page 12, where Clayton is arrested after being pulled over by an officer. The reasoning, you may ask? His passenger had an open container of alcohol, and when Clayton got pulled over, the passenger ran and left the open container.

Something many of you guys may not know about me is that I am currently studying to be a paralegal, and hopefully law school later down the line. As someone interested in law as a career, this sequence of events sounded entirely unrealistic to me. And so I hopped onto LexisNexis and Westlaw and did some research.

Under Florida law, specifically Florida Statutes § 316.1936, it is unlawful for any person to possess an open container of an alcoholic beverage while operating a vehicle or while a passenger in a vehicle being operated in the state. An open container is defined as any container of alcoholic beverage that is immediately capable of being consumed, or the seal of which has been broken. The statute further clarifies that an open container is considered to be in the possession of the operator of a vehicle if the container is not in the possession of a passenger and is not located in a locked glove compartment, locked trunk, or other locked non-passenger area of the vehicle.

If a passenger exits the vehicle in clear view of an officer, leaving behind a liquor bottle, and the driver's blood alcohol content tests negative for alcohol consumption, the driver could still be held liable under the open container law. This is because the open container would be considered in the possession of the driver if it is not in the physical control of a passenger and is not secured in a locked, non-passenger area of the vehicle. The law does not require the driver to have consumed alcohol to be in violation; mere possession of an open container in the vehicle is sufficient for liability.

However, this statute ALSO states that a violation of the open container law (Florida Statutes § 316.1936) is considered a noncriminal traffic infraction. Specifically, the driver would typically receive a ticket rather than be arrested.

The only reason Clayton would be arrested is if the officer had probable cause, such as if Calyton was showing signs of intoxication (which is not the case as written), if Clayton refused to comply with the officer’s instructions or became confrontational (which is not the case as written), or if there were other outstanding legal issues, such as outstanding warrants or driving with a suspended license (which is not the case as written).

Because of this whole snafu, it caused me to devalue the whole book overall and its sequences of events. Even though I had fun, I don't enjoy feeling like I have to double-check the legal basis of your book because something doesn't sound correct.

All that being said, I still had fun with this book. It reminded me of books by Riley Sager and Frieda McFadden (with ALL their many flaws and triumphs), and I think if you are not intimate with legal research, especially Florida-specific legal research, you could have a lot of fun with this book. :)
