Name of Agency: U.S. Department of Education
Website: https://www.ed.gov

What I Learned About the Agency:

The U.S. Department of Education’s mission is “to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.” and was established by the Department of Education Organization Act (Public Law 96-88) in 1979. The agency helps regulate programs like federal student aid, civil rights in education, and grant programs under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

Proposed Rule Chosen:

The Department is proposing to extend a currently approved information collection request (ICR) for the Rural Education Achievement Program (REAP). This includes the Small, Rural School Achievement (SRSA) and Rural and Low-Income School (RLIS) programs. The goal is to maintain how information is gathered to determine funding and eligibility for local educational agencies (LEAs), including Specially Qualified Agencies (SQAs).

My Public Comment:

I back the Department of Education's idea to keep on gathering information for the Rural Education Achievement Program, or REAP. REAP is important because it helps small and remote schools get a fair shot at federal education money. This money helps nourish equal learning opportunities for students in places that don't usually get a lot of attention. It’s crucial to keep collecting this information so we know who needs help and can share resources accurately. I'd like the Department to think about making the application forms easier to fill out. This would ease the load for smaller districts with few administrative folks and boost digital access. By keeping this process going, the Department shows it is dedicated to ensuring fairness in education across America's rural areas.

Recent News About the Agency:

Everything about the Department of Education in the news right now seems to be regarding the Great Big Beautiful Bill and Trump’s supposed efforts to dismantle it.
